Textured and Embossed Wallpaper

Some walls should be quiet. Textured and embossed wallpaper gives a room a finished surface without a loud pattern, using raised designs you can actually feel: woven linen, grasscloth, brushed plaster, and fine geometric embossing. It is the wallpaper people choose when the furniture and artwork are meant to be the interesting part.

Where it works

  • Living rooms where the sofa, rug, and art carry the colour and the walls just need depth.
  • Offices and boardrooms, where a woven texture looks professional and softens echo slightly in hard rooms.
  • Hotels and clinics, using commercial-grade embossed vinyl that takes knocks and wipes clean.
  • Older houses, because a real texture is forgiving of the small ripples and patches older plaster walls have.
  • Dining rooms under warm light, where light raking across the surface brings the relief to life in the evening.

Choosing yours

Think about how the wall is lit. Texture shows itself when light crosses it at an angle, from a window to one side or a lamp nearby. A wall lit flat from directly in front can look almost plain, which may be exactly what you want. Then weigh cleaning. Deep relief collects dust and is harder to wipe, so busy hallways and kids' rooms are better with a shallow emboss or a vinyl finish. Finally, colour: most textured papers work in one colour family, so choose it the way you would choose paint, by how it behaves in your light at different hours.
